One ting ‘bout me, I’m all about empowering women. In my opinion, real estate is one of the most powerful and safest ways to do so.
Globally, the ability for women to purchase property and take out loans without a spouse generally gained prominence in the past 100 years, and it’s not a right that I take lightly. Considering that land is an asset that's commonly associated with inheritance and financial protection or leverage, real estate is one of the safest investments not only to provide stable housing for oneself but also for future generations. Moreover, since land never depreciates and with consistent maintenance, developed property is likely to appreciate overtime, real estate is one of the most stable and reliable ways to build your wealth overtime.
In more modern times, shows like Selling Sunset and Selling Tampa have propelled real estate bosses like Christine Quinn and Sharelle Rosado into the spotlight while also highlighting real estate brokerage as a career option for women. It’s easy to see why so many women are turning to real estate: not only can it be as glamorous as seen on TV, it also offers flexibility to allow for family time while placing no ceiling on your ambitions. Real estate as a career allows women to set their own schedules and goals to work as often or as little as they want to.
With all that said, this International Women’s Day, I wanted to highlight 5 women in real estate who I find inspirational for a plethora of reasons.
When it comes to women in real estate, I consider Barbara to be the OG. Other than becoming a staple on the investment show Shark Tank, she’s famous for “turning $1,000 into a billion dollar business.” At 23, she quit her job as a waitress, borrowed $1,000 to found a real estate company and went on to establish The Corcoran Group as one of the world’s most well known real estate brokerages. Today, Barbara’s net worth is roughly $100 million.
Annie is the COO of Goodegg Investments, which is geared at allowing women to invest in real estate passively. This is my kinda carrying on: her whole business model is centered around inspiring women to invest in real estate!
Rashauna is a real estate agent who gained Real Estate Influencer status through the development of her “Flippin In Heels” home-flipping blog. Her Instagram account is inspirational to any woman with interest in a generally male-dominated field.
4. Wu Yajun
In 1995, Wu and her husband started their real estate company in China. Despite the pair divorcing years later, she remained CEO of the company and today, Wu’s net worth sits at $14.6 BILLION, making her the fifth richest person in China, the third richest woman in China and 22nd richest woman in the world. With such impressive figures, I’d aspire for a career progression like Wu’s any day!
If you’re thinking that this name sounds close to home, it’s because she’s my grandmother. Long Island born-and-raised, my grandmother was a young, single mom who climbed her way up the corporate ladder through real estate, both through brokerage and investments. Having been in the real estate industry since before The Bahamas gained independence, she opened her own real estate brokerage as an independent broker and focused her expertise in the Berry Islands.
Although she no longer practices real estate since retirement, I’m passionate about keeping her legacy, work ethic and ambition alive in the industry and beyond. What better way to honor the lady who showed me firsthand the importance of owning your own real estate as an independent woman?
Despite the hurdles that women had to jump over to progress in both the corporate world and real estate arena, more single women now own homes than single men. Whether or not this can be chalked up to the modern woman playing catch up to the opportunities that previous generations may not have had, it’s difficult to say. What we can say for sure is that millions of women like those above are taking full advantage of the opportunities that we have today. Do you or the ladies in your life aspire to join that list? 1 OAK has a team of female real estate powerhouses waiting to help you get there.
